ARE YOU A STUDENT COUNSELLOR OR DO YOU WORK TO HELP STUDENTS COPE EMOTIONALLY?

One of the frustrations of last-minute counselling cancellations is that you know there's someone who really needed the appointment and missed out.

Well you could you help HAPHE  use a 20 minute session to arm parents with insight.  Parent can't know what's going on with their child. Colleges and you are boud by confidentially clauses but you can give general tips and things to watch out for. We call it a Postcard Home.

Parents can be partners in supporting students. With parents feeling kept in the dark about their child's wellbeing. While we can't prevent traumatic events from happening, we can prevent anxiety and trauma from taking over. HAPHE is a non-profit dedicated to helping students prevent anxiety-led and trauma-led depression.

More than anything you could give insight into tell-tale signs. What parents can watch out for to help their student. Help them understand and possibly help prevent anxiety and trauma, including possible causes and how you can access support.

Like you HAPHE is on the frontline too. You'll be suprised how much general information you know that parents wish they did too.

GIVE 20 MINUTES. IT COULD SAVE LIVES.

You don't need to book a 20-minute slot or anything ... Just 5 to 10 minutes of advice in place of a last-minute cancellation session

01

Answer the phone when they call and be available to talk to them whenever they need it

02

 Listen patiently

03

Empathize

04

Offer thoughtful advice, but only if they ask for it

05

Encourage your student to talk to the Resident Assistant

06

Send them a care package

07

Offer to plan a weekend that you can come to visit them

08

Help them come up with a list of student organizations they can join

09

Send them a virtual gift card for something they can do with a friend

10

Know that they will be okay
