Just be yourself,” they say as though self were a fixed script.


But in a world where authenticity itself has become aesthetic, even real feels rehearsed.


This is authenticity fatigue the emotional exhaustion that comes from constantly proving sincerity online.

It’s a paradox unique to the age of followers:


The more we display our realness, the less real it

begins to feel.

Why?


The Performance of Vulnerability


Digital culture now prizes honesty.


We applaud openness, raw emotion, behind-the-scenes glimpses.


But when honesty becomes expectation, it morphs into performance.


People begin sharing pain on schedule, vulnerability on demand.

For students, this can feel like an emotional tax.


You’re encouraged to “show your journey,” but not your confusion.


Your story must be polished even in its imperfection.


And so “authentic” becomes another filter subtler, but just as curated.
